On Christmas Eve 1914, the sound of rifles gave way to the singing of Stille Nacht by German soldiers across No Mans Land. British troops soon joined in with Silent Night, and a quiet ceasefire began. Men emerged unarmed from their trenches, exchanging small gifts like cigars, buttons, chocolate, and tins of food.
